Summary

Microsoft is retiring the Team Guidance feature in Microsoft Places by November 3, 2025, to streamline collaboration and promote Microsoft 365 Groups. The retirement includes phased read-only and removal stages. Organizations should inform users, transition to Microsoft 365 Groups, and update training accordingly.

Details

Introduction

We’re retiring the Team Guidance feature in Microsoft Places. This feature allowed managers to set in-office team days and priorities. Its retirement supports Microsoft’s strategy to streamline collaboration tools and promote the use of Microsoft 365 Groups for team coordination and scheduling.

When this will happen

  • August 27, 2025: Announcement phase begins
  • September 29, 2025: Read-only phase begins
  • November 3, 2025: Retirement phase begins; feature fully removed

How this affects your organization

During the phased retirement:

  • Starting August 27, 2025:
    • Users will see a banner in the Team Guidance UI notifying them of the upcoming retirement.
  • After September 29, 2025:
    • Users will no longer be able to create or edit Team Guidance entries.
    • Viewing and deleting existing entries will still be possible.
  • Starting November 3, 2025:
    • Team Guidance and Workgroups will be removed from Microsoft Places.
    • Users will no longer have access to Team Guidance.
    • We recommend transitioning to Microsoft 365 Groups, which offer shared calendars, mailboxes, and collaboration tools for team coordination.

This feature is on by default and will be removed automatically.

What you can do to prepare

  • Inform users of the upcoming change
  • Begin transitioning to Microsoft 365 Groups for team scheduling
  • Update internal training and documentation
  • Visit Retirement of Places Team Guidance for migration guidance and best practices

This update complies with Microsoft’s Modern Lifecycle Policy. Over 90 days’ notice is provided to support a smooth transition.
